New York, March 28, 2019 — The Committee to Protect Journalists these days welcomed the release of Saudiwoman’s Weblog founder Eman Al Nafjan. They called on Saudi authorities to unconditionally release all other journalists in custody.
Al Nafjan has been detained since May 2018 following a crackdown on girls’ rights activists in step with information reports. According to The Associated Press and the U.K.-based Saudi human rights organization Al-Qst, Al Nafjan becomes considered one of 3 detainees released today following their appearance earlier than a judicial panel in Riyadh the previous day.
“Saudi authorities stole almost a year of Eman Al Nafjan’s existence, and they’re nevertheless looking to preserve her silence via prosecuting her for her important writing,” said CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna. “It will take many more steps – including freeing all reporters in custody without fee or conditions – before absolutely everyone even begins to take severely Saudi reform claims.”
AFP Arabic suggested that Al Nafjan and the two activists must appear before the courtroom again on April three to keep their trial, mentioning the circle of relatives’ resources. CPJ was not able to confirm any conditions referring to their launch.
